GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Anthony Geary Shares a Look at His Life in Amsterdam (EXCLUSIVE)

When Anthony Geary walked away from Luke Spencer, GENERAL HOSPITAL and Hollywood, it was for a good reason: He had his home in the Netherlands awaiting him. With more than a year under his retirement belt, the eight-time Emmy winner invited his longtime friend, photographer Jim Warren, for a return visit to Amsterdam, with the result being an exclusive look at Geary’s daily Dutch life.

“Every day is an adventure,” the GH alum smiled. “Amsterdam is a city of amazing qualities: cobblestone streets designed 400 years ago for walking and cycling, tree-lined canals and quirky historical buildings, people from all over the world wishing you a good morning in every conceivable language… I love it here.

“I’m so grateful to be able to live in this amazing city,” he added. “I love the lifestyle, the beautiful historical buildings, the art, and the culture.”

    Enjoying life in Amsterdam is quite easy for Geary, especially on "a beautiful summer day on my boat," he shared.

    Taking a walk through the City Museum, “it takes a big man to wear a skirt,” laughs Geary, who points out, “It’s Luke, David, and Goliath.”

    Two hours down the Amstel River from Amsterdam, there’s a quaint, picturesque village called Oude Kerk Aan Amstel (Old Church On The Amstel). “Cruising the river to Oude Kerk on a sunny afternoon is one of the great pleasures of living here. There is an historic inn called the Jagershuis [Hunter’s Cottage] in the village built 300 years ago for the king’s hunting parties,” Geary said. “The inn still operates and is my favorite place for lunch on these river trips.”

    Geary enjoys taking his American guests for breakfast. “The best Dutch pancakes in town are here on the Prince’s Canal.”

    “Quick! Someone wake that fool before he rams the shore!” joked Geary before taking the wheel again.

    Who says there are no restrictions in the Netherlands? “No. 1 rule in Amsterdam: Always have your photo app ready,” Geary smiled. And the actor has certainly followed that rule, becoming quite the photographer!

    Geary loves the freedom to walk and roam the city, pointing out that there are “not many cars, but watch out for those bicycles and trams!” He added with a laugh: “What will we ever do about this traffic?”

    What’s the rush when you’re retired? Geary can afford the good life. You can’t beat “cruising on auto-pilot,” he said.
