GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Matt Cohen Shares 12 of His Favorite Things (EXCLUSIVE)

Ever since Dr. Griffin Monroe first appeared on GENERAL HOSPITAL back in February of 2016, fans have been getting to know more about the priest-turned-physician. But we thought you might like to know a little bit more about his portrayer, Matt Cohen!

The GH star was kind enough to share a dozen of his favorite things with Soaps In Depth, and though the family man is a caretaker by nature, he clearly lives by the maxim that you can’t be there for others unless you’re there for yourself, too.

    1. His Tribe

    “I have to start by saying my wife and my child [Mandy Musgrave and Macklin], along with any family. And I don’t just mean my blood but my tribe of humans who consider ourselves the same — those are friends all over the world who I might not have seen in years, but we share a text here and there, and it brings pure joy to my heart.”

    2. SUPERNATURAL

    “I’ve been doing these SUPERNATURAL conventions for about 10 years, and I leave exhausted, physically drained and broken... but changed for the better, every single time. It’s a rare opportunity to be forced into conversations and talking for hours on end, both on stage and in private. People share the most incredible stories with me about life, death and everything in between, and I do the same with them. It’s one of the best exchanges I’ve ever had. I’ve only done such a small amount of the show, but what SUPERNATURAL gave me in return was literally a life and name I’m proud of.”

    3. The Holidays 

    “I’m jacked up on holiday spirit! I decorated my house for Halloween on September 15. It looked like Christmas, but in purple, green and orange. My wife’s twin sister came with her baby, and we’ll have a houseful of people every holiday. From Halloween on, for my kid, my wife and I, it’s holiday festivities every day.”

    4. Directing 

    “I’m pumped I finally did it. The fire is so lit! I’m thrilled I get to direct my wife, along with the other tremendously talented actors I have working with me. While I was prepping to shoot my short, tentatively titled Mama Bear, so many people said it was too hard for me. That was thrilling! In my life, I’ve been believed in a lot. That’s harder. When people don’t believe in you, it sets a lower expectation, so you get to shine no matter what.”

    5. Puttering 

    “Gardening and working on my home for my family — and with them! I love that I have to fix the plumbing and just upkeep this structure so my family can survive and live in a beautiful home. There’s just something about the feeling of being there to provide and build. It’s that hunter-gatherer thing.”

    6. Therapy 

    “I have a great therapist I talk to on FaceTime once a month. I have to credit Maurice Benard (Sonny) for this. He could tell I was going through some bumps, so he spoke to me, and he changed me. If you sit down with a therapist you trust, you’re forced to examine yourself, and man, it is special. It forces you out of your comfort zone, so you grow as a human being, change the lives of the people around you and are able to grab onto new experiences.”

    7. Cooking 

    “I worked as a chef in college and got to be grill-man at a wild-game restaurant, so I cooked bison, buffalo, quail, venison, alligator and weird, high-end meats. Lately, I’ve been back in the kitchen, trying to get creative with a cookbook. I’m totally a Pinterest dad. I love eating, and I love feeding my family. It goes back to that hunter-gatherer-provider thing.”

    8. Crafting 

    “I’ve been doing a lot of crafting with my wife and kid. Macklin’s home-schooled, and every day, Mom does a really cool craft with him — like making homemade slime — and then he’ll come to me and we’ll go do crafts in the garage. Recently, I taught him to spray-paint. He’s 3 and a half, so just pressing a button with gloves and a mask on is a big deal to him. It’s a whole new thing. There’s so much joy in teaching and creating with family.”

    9. His Florida Posse

    “I’m hoping to get my dad, half brother and half sister to move out to California. My father raised me by himself and then raised Tyler and Karly, who are 15 and 16, by himself. He’s been a father since he was 24 and just turned 60. That’s a long time to be alone and focused on other people! I want to get him happy and healthy — and to do that, he needs to focus on himself. He’s making some great progress this year. And Karly lost one of her friends in the Parkland shooting. She’s a young, talented dancer, and she’s finally starting to shine, again. It’s beautiful to see. The older you get, the more emotional you get. You find yourself crying at the thought of happiness for your family.”

    10. Boxing 

    “I’m partners in a boxing gym in LA and I haven’t been back there, but when I get to workout before or after GH, I go to the nearest gym to hit the bag. Just spending 45 minutes hitting a bag by yourself is huge. This ties into that therapy thing. We don’t spend enough time being bored with ourselves. We pick up the phone, turn on the TV, do something to keep ourselves occupied. It’s so important to just be alone with your thoughts, sometimes.”

    11. Therapy 

    “This is such a small thing... but such a big thing. I ran seven miles a day, seven days a week for about five years. Then we had Macklin, so I just did what I could when I could, and that shift created tendinopathy — the thickening and hardening of the Achilles tendon. I’ve been in pain since my kid was born, but I finally started physical therapy, and I’ve found great joy in it. It hurts, and it’s some of the hardest work possible, with little to no immediate results... but that leads us to No. 12!”

    12. Work 

    “Accepting work as happiness has changed my life. Iwork my ass off at GH, and I love it... but No. 12 really encompasses everything in my life. I’d become complacent to the journey I was on, so this year, I decided to work to change my story in every aspect possible. I’m working towards changing how I feel, being a better father and husband, being a better employee. I have a new lease on life. Work is the dirtiest word, but you have to embrace that four-letter word. You win everything when you do."
