General Hospital's Rebecca Herbst Loves Being a Mom

When not playing Elizabeth Webber on GENERAL HOSPITAL, there’s nothing Rebecca Herbst loves more than spending time with the three children she and husband Michael Saucedo (ex-Juan) are raising. And in today’s modern world, they love to take Ethan, 16, Ella, 14, and Emerson, 6, back to nature for some quality time. “Lately, we’ve really been enjoying hiking,” Herbst confided to Soaps In Depth. “I love taking them out into the fresh air and away from the concrete, cars, and electronics, and hiking for hours upon hours with just us for company. The conversations we have and the things we explore, it’s priceless. There’s no distraction.

“We take our phones everywhere like the rest of the world — because we need to take pictures!” the actress added with a laugh. “But my kids know that when we’re together and hanging out, nobody’s on their phone. And they love hiking as much as I do. So for them, it’s a treat every time I say, ‘Let’s go walk the beach or hike the mountains.’”

Herbst admitted that when it comes to being a mother, she learned from the best — her own mom, Debbie! “My mom used to say to me, ‘If you just do a little as you go…’ — meaning, if you just clean up a little bit, it won’t be such a big mess. It would drive me up the wall!” she recalled. “But now I get all of her little, annoying sayings… and I repeat them. I roll my eyes at myself, but I still say them!”

But with oldest son, Ethan, heading into his senior year of high school, Herbst is now having to face what all mothers do, which is letting go of children when they become adults. “It breaks my heart,” she confessed. “I aim to be the strong mom who reminds herself every day that this is what we do — we raise these kids to go out on their own and be strong, independent people, good stewards of the Earth and kind human beings. But the thought of not having him under my roof is heartbreaking. It’s going to be a rough year… for me!”

Thankfully, no matter where Herbst’s children go in the years to come, their hearts will always be with their mother!
