Laura Wright Reveals What It’s Really Like Working at GENERAL HOSPITAL (EXCLUSIVE)
Actress Laura Wright has been playing the role of Carly Corinthos since 2005, but she was a soap star long before that with her roles as Ally Rescott on LOVING and THE CITY as well as Cassie Layne Winslow on CBS’ GUIDING LIGHT. But every set is different, so we thought we’d ask her what it’s like working at GH right now with a revealing Q&A session!
My favorite days at work are the ones when I get to…
“Commute to work with [my real-life boyrfriend] Wesley Ramsey (Peter).”
My first day, I remember thinking…
“‘Oh my God, they’re spending this much money on special effects?’ I showed up during the train crash, remember? And I had just left GUIDING LIGHT, where we didn’t even have a dress rehearsal. We were going straight to tape. There were certainly no big stunts anymore. But GH was going till midnight and doing scenes over 10 times. It was a shock.”
When I get to work, the first think I do is…
“Go to the green room to make myself a cup of Earl Grey tea. Then I go to hair and makeup, because I’ve got to get hair- and-makeup-ready.”
One thing fans might be surprised to know about the set is…
“How small it is. The only permanent set is the nurses’ hub, and everyone is always surprised by how much bigger it looks on TV. And we have so many sets up at once. Right next to the Metro Court restaurant could be a bed fragment, because someone has a love scene, but that’s the only thing they’re doing in the room, so they just have a wall with the bed!”
When I’m waiting to get called to the set, you can usually find me…
“In my dressing room reading, working on my scripts or hanging out with Wes. We have our own rooms, so if we have a heavy material day, I won’t really see him that much except when we’re leaving. And when I’m at work by myself, I’m always by myself in my dressing room. Sometimes, if it’s a long day and I’m trying to figure out what the heck is going on, I’ll go check in with the hair and makeup room, but I rarely go hang out anywhere. I like my dressing room! Right now I’m rereading The Seven Spiritual Laws Of Success by Deepak Chopra, I have The Ten Commitments: Translating Good Intentions Into Great Choices by David Simon, and I just downloaded and am listening to Change Your Thoughts — Change Your Life: Living The Wisdom Of The Tao by Wayne Dyer. It’s always some heavy spiritual stuff. (Laughs.) When I drive, that’s when I have my David Baldacci or John Grisham books playing — any kind of murder mystery. You can’t do the serious stuff when you’re driving because you can’t pay attention.”

The castmate who remains a mystery to me, even now, is…
“Kelly Monaco (Sam), because I never hang out with her that much, off set. Kelly’s still a mystery in a million ways, but I adore her.”
On my lunch break, you might find me…
“At the commissary, making a salad.”
My favorite set to work on is…
“Sonny’s living room… and I haven’t gotten to work on it yet, but I love Charlie’s Pub. It’s a great set. I want to own it. I want Carly to buy it from Julian and work behind the bar! That’s how much I like it.”
The last thing I do before leaving work at the end of the day is…
“Get my wardrobe and turn off my lights. Well, most of the time I turn off my lights. Sometimes Wesley has to remind me. He comes by my room on the way out, just because of where it is in the walk out of the studio, and he’ll be like, ‘You forgot your lights again!’”
