Catching up With ONE LIFE TO LIVE’s David Fumero (EXCLUSIVE)

On ONE LIFE TO LIVE, a young Cristian Vega was beloved for being both an artist and a romantic. Subsequently, his portrayer, David Fumero, showed another side of himself as a duplicitous attorney who tried — but eventually failed — to keep his head above water on Starz’s POWER. Now, the actor has re-invented himself as Lt. Jason Calloway, the by-the-book head of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Narcotics Division, in the Spectrum Original series L.A.’S FINEST available now on demand.

“I was a big fan of the Bad Boys movies, and in this spin-off, Gabrielle Union’s [former DEA agent] Sydney Burnett joins the LAPD,” the soap graduate explained to Soaps In Depth. “She and her partner, Nancy McKenna, played by Jessica Alba, are badass and have complicated histories in Los Angeles and within the whole smuggling world, so they end up doing things that Calloway doesn’t always agree with.”

While the dynamic duo work robbery/ homicide, when they wind up going after a drug smuggler, Fumero said, “our worlds [become] twisted together… I end up getting involved and leading a task force.” Although Calloway is a classic, straight arrow, Syd has a way of getting him to bend. “They had a thing at one point, a one-night stand, so he’s flirty with her in the beginning,” he revealed. “And that’s kind of the reason why when they go off track, he accepts it and helps her out. There’s something there.”

While he enjoyed taking on this good guy role, Fumero admits that casting directors usually see him now for nefarious characters. “I did a thing for Lifetime [Dating To Kill] where I was a really twisted guy, and last summer, my wife, Melissa [Fumero, OLTL’s Adriana], and I shot an indie [Stone In The Water] where I played her abusive boyfriend. And I just played a bad dude on CHICAGO FIRE. “It’s a lot of fun,” he added, “but these characters are nothing like Cristian, who was the hero of heroes.”

“From the day we met, Kamar [de los Reyes, Antonio] and I just got along,” the OLTL alum shared. “We talk once a week and give each other advice about stuff. We’re still like brothers.” (Photo Credit: ABC/Lou Rocco)

While the OLTL protagonist surely would’ve made a great dad, he never got that chance. Fumero, however, is enjoying raising his son, Enzo. “I’ve been as busy as a 3-year-old keeps you,” he laughed. “He’s very polite and says please, but when this kid wants something, or wants to do something, he gets hardheaded!”
