William Lipton Reveals How GENERAL HOSPITAL Changed His Life (EXCLUSIVE)

Tags:

Spend a few minutes with William Lipton, and you can tell that he’s a well-mannered kid with a good head on his shoulders. “There were some rough patches in second grade,” cracked the high-school junior, who insisted that being cast as GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Cameron hasn’t changed him — at least not for the worse! “This is the first big, longlasting thing I’ve done, and I’m so happy because it’s such a great community to be a part of.

“What a privilege it is to work with such talented actors,” he added. “Every day I’m on set, I learn something new. There were definitely some challenges at the beginning. The pace of how much is being shot is incredible. But the entire studio is a well-oiled machine. You come in at 7 a.m., and they’re building sets. It’s amazing! Thankfully, with the help everyone so graciously gave, I’m doing very well.” Indeed he is. Lipton’s been breaking our hearts as Cameron! And this talented teen is doing impressive things off-camera as well!

Now that Cam’s revealed that he’s a musician, Lipton has gotten to share his other passion with GH’s audience. Not only has he performed on the soap, but he actually wrote the song his character sang at Liz and Franco’s wedding. “I just happened to be writing a song from the perspective of my character, and the fact that I was able to present that on the show was so amazing,” he said. “It’s been such a privilege to get to mix my acting with my music. I love playing someone else as an actor, and I also love writing music.”

And you’d better believe Lipton loves taking the stage — especially when he and WJM bandmate Jeremey Yun got to do it in front of adoring fans on the FOMO Tour. “We opened up for a band called Pretty Much,” he said. “They’re a huge boy band. That was amazing.”

When Lipton’s not on the road for a concert or on set at GH, he’s in San Francisco’s Bay Area — just hanging with his family, making music and attending his local public school. “I’m still a totally normal kid,” he insisted. “I’m like my friends, and I’m able to go right back to class.”

This busy, successful teen seems to have it all together. And like his castmate, fulltime student and volleyball player Eden McCoy (Josslyn), he attributes the balance he’s found to his parents’ expectations and his own teen scene. “I feel very strongly that I want to stay in public school,” he said. “There’s a lot of social aspects I feel are very crucial to my development. [Juggling work and school] takes a lot of communication with the teachers. But I love what I do — and in order to do what I love, I have to do well in school. That’s the rule. If I start messing up in school, it’s game over.”

Fans often ask Lipton if Cam will ever get out of the friend zone with Joss. “I give them all the same answer: ‘Only time will tell.’ Cam’s love will always stay true… unless that changes!” (Photo Credit: Jim Warren)

All that said, Lipton admits that he was a bit nervous about coming back to school after his summer of Port Charles drama, screaming fans and family time. “I was thinking about it a lot when I was on vacation in Sweden, and I finally came to terms with it: I’m going to have a great junior year,” he grinned. “I’m going to put a lot of work in, and it’s going to feel rewarding.”

The actor is also dropping new music. “Recently, I’ve been doing a lot of singer-songwriter stuff,” he shares. “And I’m re-recording a bunch of stuff I did back when I was in seventh grade. I like writing all kinds of [music] and challenging myself.” While Lipton seems unlikely to act out in real life, he is hoping to do just that soon on GH. “We’ve seen Cam be a really good kid for a while now,” he says. “It’s time for him to do something bad again!”
