GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Daytime Emmy Award Nominees Speak Out

Tags:

This year, GENERAL HOSPITAL earned a total of 25 nominations for the Daytime Emmy Awards. Nearly all of GH‘s acting nominees — Jon Lindstrom (Kevin), Patricia Bethune (ex-Mary Pat), William Lipton (Cameron), Hayley Erin (ex-Kiki), Chloe Lanier (ex-Nelle), Garren Stitt (Oscar), Maurice Bernard (Sonny), Max Gail (Mike), Dominic Zamprogna (ex-Dante), Laura Wright (Carly), Eden McCoy (Josslyn), and Vernee Watson (Stella) — were interviewed during a recent Facebook Live broadcast. GH’s nominees appeared in two groups of 6, each a mix of first-time and veteran nominees.

The mood during the interviews was relaxed, playful and fun. It’s easy to see why GH garnered so many nominations; the cast works brilliantly with each other on and off the set. On their closeness as a cast, Wright stated,”You know what I also think is important is that we go together [to the Emmys] as a cast. Like even doing this [together] is super fun. Wednesday night is the reception, and then going to the Emmys in sync, with being there with everyone, there’s a certain celebration.” The actress views the award show as a way for all the daytime shows get their own spotlight. “It’s fun. We get to celebrate the entire medium for one week a year.”

In some of the acting categories, GH actors and actresses are vying for the same golden prize. While some casts would be competitive, this cast lifts each other up, just like a family. Lindstrom, whose first Daytime Emmy nomination was back in 2010 for his work on AS THE WORLD TURNS, and is now up for his second as twins Kevin and Ryan, views being nominated as kudos from the industry. “To have a vote thrown your way by peers and colleagues that you care about, that you love and respect, and know how damn hard it is to do this, and [then] they throw a vote towards you, that only makes you feel that much better,” he declared. “Because it is a peer award. We’re basically patting ourselves on the back.” Bethune concurred, adding: “It’s a rare gift in a career. Because there are so many wonderful actors, especially in this town, New York, and everywhere…so, just to say, ‘Oh, thank you. We did our work and we’re glad you noticed.’”

Zamprogna, who left GH in the spring of 2018, was surprised to find himself on the list of nominees for a third time. “I wasn’t expecting anything,” he confessed. “No, I wasn’t. It was a bit of a trip for me, honestly. I had left the show in May. I didn’t know if I had enough stuff on my reel.”

First-time nominee McCoy, who is up for Outstanding Younger Actress, is still overwhelmed by the entire experience. “I’m very honored and very excited. I wasn’t expecting it at all. At all. I learn so much every day and I always say that when this happened, that when I [became] a nominee, it just feels like a bonus. Like you almost forget that something like this happens, that you can be rewarded for it.”

And speaking of forgetting things, Lanier — who’s up for her second award — had trouble remembering her first Emmy appearance. When asked about her experience last year, she admitted, “I kinda blacked out. I wasn’t cognizant for any of it. I remember that I made ‘ugly cry face,’ and then, um… but it went really, really fast. It’s so funny, because you go through this whole thing; what should I wear, what makeup artist should I use, all that stuff and then it’s like… it’s done! But it’s super fun and I’m super grateful. And I’m excited to be able to do it again.”
