Soap operas are all about love in the afternoon, and GENERAL HOSPITAL has had more than its fair share of supercouples over the years. Some, like the legendary Luke and Laura, became cemented in pop culture history, while others, like Jason and Liz, inspired devoted followings of die-hard fans. Heck, Liz is just one of the many characters who have been in more than one supercouple pairing. Sonny and Brenda are just a couple others who found more than one true love over the years!

After 40 years, what can be said about daytime television’s most iconic couple that hasn’t already been said? Maybe nothing. But this, at least, bears repeating: The Spencers didn’t catch fire because of the controversy over Laura falling in love with her rapist or because of the action stories that accompanied their romance. (Let’s be real: Revered though they may be, plots like the Ice Princess were silly as hell!) And the couple didn’t endure over decades because seeing Luke and Laura on screen filled viewers with a sense of nostalgia. Uh-uh. The couple became a supercouple and then the creme de la creme of supercouples thanks to Anthony Geary and Genie Francis and their chemistry, at first so sizzling that it threatened with every scene to fry our TVs and, later, as tender and raw as a bruise. Add to their winning combination writing that pinned to even the characters’ nuttiest adventures a love as real as earth and sky, and that, fellow GH fans, is the reason that, now and forever, Luke and Laura are daytime’s most legendary pairing.

Only long, longtime GH viewers remember that the Hardys, while in their later years the portrait of stability, initially had a relationship that was as tumultuous as, say, Sonny and Carly Corinthos’. At first, Audrey had a bad habit of marrying men who weren’t Steve and hatching plots that were all but guaranteed to backfire on her. And Steve, while as stand-up a guy as ever walked the halls of General Hospital, hung in the closet next to his lab coat a skeleton the size of surprise son Jeff Webber.

Even when they became husband and wife, it was only intended to be a marriage of convenience, a way to honor his “late” best friend and her babydaddy, Luke Spencer, and keep the British beauty from being deported. But a funny thing happened after the non-couple said their bittersweet “I do’s.” They grew closer and closer, their platonic feelings growing less friendly and more passionate by the day, and supported one another through her miscarriage. So by the time they learned that Luke still had a pulse, the heart that provided it was well on its way to being broken.

From their first dance at the Policeman’s Ball in 1986, there was no denying the chemistry between Duke Lavery and Anna Devane. Unfortunately, there was also no denying the mountainous size of the obstacles presented by the Scotsman’s underworld ties. The push/pull of the lovers being drawn together from different worlds certainly sparked great passion. (You may recall, for instance, the argument during which she was interrupted by his toe-curling kiss while calling him “the most conniving, conceited, ruthless...” We never did find out how that sentence was going to end!) But, ultimately, his Mob connections severed the deep bond that they had formed, cutting short the exciting life that they’d sworn to share.

Although everyone told Brenda Barrett that Sonny Corinthos was trouble, she hardly needed them to: She could tell from the mischievous gleam that lit up his eyes anytime he flashed his irresistible dimples at her. Still, she could only fight her attraction for so long. It didn’t matter to her that he was older (she was just a teenager when they met). It didn’t matter to her that he pushed her buttons (or, rather, it did matter — in a hot way). It didn’t really even matter to her that he had a bad-boy reputation (she kinda liked that, truth be told). Her heart wanted exactly the same thing that his did — for them to be together. As he once told her, “We don’t have a choice, like moths to a flame.” And, just like moths who got too close to the fire, oh, how they burned.

And, while the couple’s intentions were good and their bond strong as steel, dark clouds seemed to hover overhead wherever they went, leading to lies (like the whopper she told about how she’d wound up with baby Lucas in her possession), infidelity (her, with Damian Smith; him, with her surprise stepdaughter, Carly) and worse (the death of their daughter, B.J.).

The marriage didn’t last, no. But the memory of the dreamy way Frisco gazed at Felicia has stayed with us — and, whether she’d admit it, her, too, we bet. (Sorry, Mac.)

But what she actually did was introduce her pal to, if not the love of her life, certainly one of the loves of her life. Sure, at first, Brenda only used the hunk to make her ex, Sonny, jealous. Later, though, Jax helped piece back together Brenda’s shattered heart, and their feelings for one another intensified. Eventually, fearful as she was of marriage, she even agreed aboard his yacht to become his wife. “Fish, stars, moon,” he declared afterward, wrapping in his arms his beautiful bride, “I give you Mr. and Mrs. Jacks.” At least for a few magical moments, anyway.

Hard as it is to believe now, Liz was nothin’ but trouble when first she came to town. But the second Lucky Spencer came upon her smoking outside Kelly’s, he saw something more... despite the fact that, within five minutes, she’d insulted several members of his family and claimed that her name was Uma Thurman! “I guess this was my ‘lucky’ night,” she teased before walking away, never guessing just how right she was. When Elizabeth needed a friend most — after she was brutally raped in the park — Lucky stuck to her like glue, even going so far as to sleep on the floor of her bedroom to keep her safe. In time, he came to feel much more than protective of her, and she came to realize how lucky she’d actually gotten when they met.

Putting these two together was like pouring gasoline on an open flame. Even the way that their relationship started was combustible, with Port Charles’ godfather spitefully putting the moves on pal Jason’s girlfriend to “show him what you really are.” Amazingly, out of that ill-advised night of hate sex came a love that was so powerful that it’s never burned out but risen from the ashes, blazing brighter than before, almost as regularly as the sun’s come up. As damaged as the Corinthoses are, there may always be an undercurrent of toxicity to their tempting entanglement. But there’s also a trust born of knowing that they don’t just get one another, they have one another. So no wonder they can’t stay apart even when they mean to. As Carly put it during an estrangement from Sonny, “Life’s short, and there are no promises. If tomorrow I get hit by a bus, I’d regret not spending my last night with you!”

These two docs were in rough shape when they first started spending time together. She was still getting over the demise of her marriage to Cameron Faulkner — not to mention the death of Cameron himself! — and he was doing his damnedest to stay away from brother Jeff Webber’s wife, Monica. But they were good for one another. So good, in fact, that they went on to become Port Charles’ poster couple for a happy, stable relationship. At least until a car accident supposedly made a widower of Rick.

We knew. The future Drakes might not have known when they embarked on their no-strings-attached relationship in 2006. But by then, we could tell — from the way they squabbled over patient care and then gazed at one another when they were never sure enough that they wouldn’t be caught — that there were going to be strings, wonderful, messy, romantic strings. Robin put up a good fight, once even asking the soon-to-be-reformed playboy, “Do these lines actually work on some women?” Patrick fought it, too, fleeing to Vegas as if his feelings were something he could keep out of his luggage. Nonetheless, it was only a matter of time before Scrubs realized that, whether they liked it or not, they were so head over heels for one another that the former Casanova of General Hospital was suggesting to Robin, “When this moment is over, I can bet that I’ll love you more than I even thought was possible.” (By the way, he won that bet.)

No one could ever accuse Port Charles’ resident Bickersons of being a boring old married couple. Their relationship was marked by as many accusations of adultery — founded accusations, we might add — as it was declarations of love. But here’s the crazy thing about the Drs. Quartermaine. Beneath the insults and the threats and the at times stunning displays of loathing, they were not only mad about each other, they were made for each other, a fact that thankfully they’d gotten through their thick skulls before Alan passed away.
