All the recent turmoil in his life has caused Dr. Griffin Monroe to leave GENERAL HOSPITAL. The hunky physician made his debut in February of 2016 with actor Matt Cohen playing the role of the priest-turned-doctor. And while the guy managed to get through all the other traumas life has thrown at him, Port Charles ultimately proved too much for him.
Dr. Monroe took over the neurosurgery position at General Hospital vacated by Patrick Drake, and soon discovered that his first patient, Sonny Corinthos, was faking his paralysis. He also treated Kiki Jerome after she was shot, as well as Tracy Quartermaine after she suffered a seizure.
When Lucas Jones introduced Griffin to Anna Devane, it was clear the two shared a connection, and the doctor confided to the spy that Duke Lavery is his father. (He had grown up never knowing until after his mother, Margaret Monroe left him a letter explaining the truth.) In addition, it was revealed that Griffin was the man that Nathan shot years ago for sleeping with his wife, Claudette. So when the paternity of Claudette’s daughter, Charlotte, was in question, there was a period of time when Griffin thought he might be her daddy.
Griffin’s connection to Duke came back to haunt him when Olivia Jerome kidnapped him in a bizarre attempt to bring Duke back from the dead. Thankfully, Anna was able to rescue him from the psycho who had him captive in the hospital basement!
Griffin found himself drawn to Ava Jerome while counseling her as she struggled to recover from her terrible burns. This soon blossomed into love, and he even left the priesthood in order to pursue a relationship with her. However, despite it initially seeming like Ava had turned over a new leaf, she quickly returned to her scheming ways and Griffin saw her in a whole new light. (Although to be fair, he wasn’t completely on the up and up himself at the time, keeping the secret that he knew Peter August was Henrik Faison!)
After breaking up with Ava, Griffin and an equally-heartbroken Kiki found comfort with each other following the 2018 Nurses Ball and wound up sleeping together! But when Ava begged forgiveness and Griffin took her back, he and Kiki agreed to keep their liaison a secret. Unfortunately, the truth came out during the trial where Kiki was suing Dr. Bensch for sexual harassment, and all hell broke loose!
Out for revenge, Ava went to Monica Quartermaine with the information that Griffin had secretly run a DNA test on Peter to confirm his identity as Henrik, and as chief of staff, Monica had to inform the doc that he was suspended from practicing medicine.
Griffin worked to get his job back and pursued a romance with Kiki. But a bitterly jealous Ava vowed revenge on both of them for betraying her. And unfortunately, Ava's new beau was serial killer Ryan Chamberlain masquerading as Kevin Collins, so he took care of the revenge part by brutally murdering Kiki! Griffin was devastated by his loss, and struggled to keep himself together.
Ultimately, Griffin realized that he just couldn't deal with all the memories that Port Charles held for him and chose to resign his position at the hospital and leave town. However, there's still the possibility that he could return one day. Stay tuned to see if that happens, and for more GH news, keep reading the ABC edition of Soaps In Depth magazine!
