Over the years, Maurice Benard often joked about how unlikely it would be to see Sonny ever singing at the GENERAL HOSPITAL Nurses Ball, but this year, the mobster actually took the stage! Granted, it was only because his father, who was performing “Summer Wind” at this year’s gala, forgot the words. As Mike stood on stage in front of a silent audience, confused and afraid, Sonny jumped up to join him and help him finish the song together.
And while fans didn’t get to hear much of Benard’s vocals on GH, the actor shared a little snippet of himself singing along to Frank Sinatra in his car as he drove down the road (presumably on lunch break or something since he’s dressed in the tuxedo he wore on the show!) and he sounds great! “Rehearsing for the Nurses Ball,” Benard joked. “Trying my best. I don’t think Frank should be worried.”
The moment between Sonny and Mike at the Nurses Ball was another in a series of powerful scenes telling the story of Mike’s Alzheimer’s Disease. “Max is amazing,” Benard told Soaps In Depth of on-screen father Max Gail. “He’s so good — all I have to do is look into his eyes.”
This isn’t the first time Benard has jokingly shown off his vocal chops. Last year, he and castmate Dominic Zamprogna (Dante) belted out a little bit of “Jet Song” from West Side Story (with Zamprogna stepping in to help out when Benard struggled with the lyrics!). And talent clearly runs in the family because the proud pop captured his son, Joshua, singing along to a Justin Bieber song in the car and he sounded great!
Hopefully one day Benard will stop downplaying his singing abilities and grace us with a proper performance we can all enjoy. Until then, we’ll take what we can get!
