Rebecca Herbst Previews Liz’s Uncertain Future on GENERAL HOSPITAL (EXCLUSIVE)

Tags:

At the GENERAL HOSPITAL Fan Club Weekend, everyone was congratulating Rebecca Herbst on Elizabeth’s marriage to Franco — and she understood their joy. The jailhouse nuptials and reception on the Haunted Star were “a lot of fun!” she said to Soaps In Depth. “Elizabeth hasn’t done that in a long time. To have that happy wedding and reception? And there’s always got to be something that happens at a reception in Port Charles!  But having Obrecht be pushed overboard wasn’t a big deal to Elizabeth. Of course, she doesn’t want anybody hurt… but nobody died. So it was quite successful!”

Unfortunately, the honeymoon was less so. After spending the last few years playing the arc of Franco’s redemption and tapping into grounded family stories about gender issues, molestation and absentee fathers, his and Liz’s story got a bit… crazy!

While Elizabeth and her boys managed to avoid Shiloh for much of his reign of terror, everything changed once the con man snatched Cameron. Onetime villain Franco threw himself into Dr. Cabot’s hands to save his stepson… and awakened as Drew Cain. With the family now thrust into what Herbst calls “fantasy land,” she cheered, “I’m all in!” After all, Port Charles romances usually hit a snag when life looks too good. But this time, Herbst noted, “It’s blowing up in a different way. Now, Elizabeth’s going to be fighting for a man who no longer exists but sits in front of her. It’s going to be a struggle.”

Franco’s last words were a promise to come back to his family, but now Drew is in control of his body. “So it’s all up to Elizabeth,” Herbst contended. “She’s not going to stop fighting to get Franco back. I know Elizabeth is going to love him no matter what… but at some point, if Franco isn’t there, she can’t make another man fall in love with her just because they had history.”

What would Elizabeth do if that turned out to be the case? Many a fan is hoping that she might revert to the schemer that she was when she first hit Port Charles. And this situation “is pushing her towards taking action — but in a legal way,” Herbst hastened to note. “There’s nothing illegal about it, because she has rights as Franco’s wife.”

The problem is that Franco/Drew shares something far more meaningful than paperwork with Elizabeth’s girlfriend, Kim! “For the first time since her Drew Cain has been gone, someone is having the same memories as Kim,” Herbst noted with a sigh. “I think that’s going to get Kim. So it will be interesting to see where this goes!”

Indeed it will. With Elizabeth’s happy ending now up for grabs, it’s anyone’s guess how insane this sci-fi love story will get — and that sounds great to Herbst, who’s ready for the drama. “I embrace it,” she said with a grin. “I totally look forward to it.”
