Some GENERAL HOSPITAL stars will be appearing in the powerful new film Surviving Theater 9, which is based on the true stories of the midnight screening of Batman: The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, CO, on July 20, 2012, where a gunman opened fire in the theater. The incident, which killed 12 and injured 70, was the largest mass shooting in the United States at the time. Sadly, since then, there have been more incidents that have broken that record.

GH actors Corbin Bernsen (ex-Durant), Robert Palmer Watkins (Dillon), William deVry (Julian), and Donnell Turner (Curtis) will be helping writer and director Tim McGrath, who was one of the survivors, tell his own story and that of the others whose lives were irrevocably changed by the tragic events of that night.

“Shootings are happening more and more, and it really affects people’s lives,” Watkins said in an interview with some of the cast. “It’s in the media, when it happens, for a few weeks and everybody’s talking about it, and then nobody talks about it. It disappears.”

Turner, who like many others, was familiar with the shooting, was honored to be a part of telling the powerful tale. “The impact of the story, what it meant to me when I heard about it on the news,” he mused. “The idea that years later, I could be a part of telling the story in a meaningful way, was exciting to me.”

McGrath was inspired to tell this story to help people heal and so that survivors of violent events such as these can know they are not alone. “The intention for Theater 9 is having a film that shows what people do with what life hands them makes all the difference,” McGrath said in a statement. “And give a path for anyone going through a tough time. The film does not show the shooter, and is non-partisan about gun control. There is plenty of comment on those topics. This is something we haven’t seen.”

A release date for Surviving Theater 9 has not yet been announced, but you can check out the trailer now.
