That's Maysoon Zayid playing Zahra Amir, Shiloh's lawyer on GENERAL HOSPITAL. She describes herself on her own website as a "comedian, actress, disability advocate, and tap dancer." The Palestinian performer turned to stand-up comedy when she found it difficult to land roles because of her cerebral palsy, but once told the New York Times that "her lifelong dream was to appear on GH." Well, now that dream has finally come true! And better still, the actress revealed the week after her first episode: "It's official! I'm recurring!" So as Shiloh's case continues, look for Zayid to make even more appearances.
Zahra Amir made her debut in the June 21 episode when Diane Miller ran into her at the courthouse. Zahra is representing Shiloh in his custody battle over the child he believes to be his son, Wiley. In a town known for talented take-no-prisoners attorneys like Diane, Alexis Davis, and Scotty Baldwin, Zahra will certainly have her work cut out for her! (Especially since Shiloh is a nasty character and a cult leader to boot!)
Zayid is best known for her work as a stand-up comic, and her TED talk went viral. She also had a role in the 2008 Adam Sandler film You Don't Mess With the Zohan. She also developed a pilot for a sitcom called CAN-CAN, a semi-autobiographical look at her life. There has been no indication how long her run on GH will last, but given that people in Port Charles are always in need of a good attorney, Zahra could be kept pretty busy. Especially if she's willing to take on clients like Shiloh, who lawyers like Diane and Alexis wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole!
Stay tuned to watch Zayid's dream of being in Port Charles come true, and for more GH news, keep reading the ABC edition of Soaps In Depth magazine.
