Kimberly McCullough Announces Her New Directing Job and Reveals If She’d Ever Direct at GENERAL HOSPITAL

Tags:

She may have her hands full with her new son, Otis, but Kimberly McCullough is not slowing down! Before her baby’s birth, she returned to GENERAL HOSPITAL as Robin for another visit, but now she’s back to pursuing her other love: Directing! But she’s not doing it at GH… at least not yet! Nope, this time she’s helmed a couple episodes of the upcoming YouTube Red series YOUTH & CONSEQUENCES that she hasn’t been able to talk about until the show was finally announced. “I did two episodes at the same time,” she told Soaps In Depth. “It was my first finale that I’ve done, so I’m really excited about that.

“It’s about being a teenager and living under intense scrutiny and living in a different world of social media,” McCullough added. “It’s a dramedy and it stars Anna Ankana, who is a YouTube phenomenon. She’s also a great actress. It’s an ensemble cast of young people. They are so amazing and I can’t wait for everyone to see it.” Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride) will guest star as her father, Joel Cutney, and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES star and ONE LIFE TO LIVE alum Marcia Cross (Kate) will be appearing as the school’s Principal Cowher. YOUTH & CONSEQUENCES is slated to premiere on YouTube’s new subscription service in 2018.

And that’s not all McCullough has been up to. Back in August, she revealed that she was directing at the Netflix revival of ONE DAY AT A TIME! “Boom!” she captioned an Instagram photo of her parking space at the studio.

Loosely based on the classic sitcom, Netflix’s ONE DAY AT A TIME follows Penelope Alvarez, played by Justina Machado, as she raises her two children with the help of her colorful mother, played by Rita Moreno. The first season premiered in January of 2017, and in March, it was renewed for a second. McCullough was not only thrilled to direct an episode of season two, but to get the chance to work with showbiz legend Moreno. “Year. Made,” the actress-turned-director declared of the photo they took together.

In addition to creating the series HEY DAY, a fictionalized look at a hit daytime soap in the ‘80s, McCullough has also directed episodes of SHAKE IT UP!, K.C. UNDERCOVER, and PRETTY LITTLE LIARS. And while she’s happy to return to GH occasionally to act, directing an episode of the soap on which she grew up is a completely different ball of wax!

“I would do it if I was asked,” McCullough admitted to Soaps In Depth. “But it’s also really hard, what these guys have to do. They move so quickly. I think I could do it, because I actually shadowed one of the directors when I was still working there as an actor, so I know how to do it. It’s just a lot of work! If I was there, I’d rather be acting because it’s what I know. On PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, I get seven days to set. At GH, you get one or two.”

Whether McCullough returns to GH in front of or behind the camera, we’ll look forward to that, and of course, as she continues to announce more of her gigs — acting or directing — we’ll be sure to let you know all about them!
