Backstage at Maurice Benard's General Hospital Anniversary Party

For the past quarter of a century, Maurice Benard has been playing Sonny Corinthos on GENERAL HOSPITAL. We’ve already talked to the actor as he reflected on his 25 years in Port Charles, as well as his castmates’ paying tribute to the daytime legend in their own words. But now here’s a look at the fantastic surprise party that GH threw for Benard with the cast and crew on set, courtesy of ABC 7 in Los Angeles!

After getting over the surprise of seeing everyone gathered to celebrate his anniversary — and wearing custom-made T-shirts — Benard composed himself to declare that the affection goes both ways. “I just love them,” he said of the crew, his voice full of emotion. “And… you make it fun for me, coming to work.”

On-screen wife and frequent scene partner Laura Wright (Carly) was touched by his kind words. “Maurice has given his heart and soul and shown so much of who he is through the character of Sonny,” she expressed. “This is truly his family, and so I think wanting to stand up and thank everyone is really important to him.”

Steve Burton (Jason) also shared the love. “Everybody knows what the guy means to me,” he smiled. “But he’s just such a mentor for everybody because of his work ethic and his professionalism and how much he gives to other actors. So he just kind of sets the pace for us.”

Benard admitted that working with the younger actors on the show is important to him. “Because nobody was there for me when I was young,” he explained. “I kinda had to learn on my own. So when I came here my goal was to take these actors under my wing. And to see Steve become so successful, I’m like the proud dad.”
