ONE LIFE TO LIVE’s Eddie Alderson Thanks the Doctors and Nurses Who Saved His Life
On Oct. 9, Eddie Alderson (Matthew, ONE LIFE TO LIVE) marked the first anniversary of the end of his cancer treatments. “One year ago today I rang the bell after a month of grueling chemo, stem transplant, blood transfusions… you name it, I had it,” he shared on Instagram. “The people in these pix/videos have saved my life. I’ve been battling Hodgkins Lymphoma for almost two years now, and it’s because of the nurses and doctors and my amazing family and friends that I’m still here today. It was not easy, but the nurses and staff at 7 Scheidt made my time spent there go by fast and easy.”
Alderson shared some photos of himself with the doctors and nurses at the hematology/oncology unit at Pennsylvania Hospital who helped save his life when he recently returned to visit them. But before those pics, you can see the video of him on his way out of the clinic where he stopped to ring the bell that symbolized the end of his treatments. (The first video in the series is a nurse removing a tube from his arm, so it’s not for the squeamish!)
Soap fans have been watching Alderson grow up on-screen since he joined the cast of OLTL as Matthew Buchanan back in May of 2001, and have been following his journey offering their love and support as he underwent treatments for his cancer. After finishing his first chemotherapy treatment, the young man had to return to the hospital in April for more, but on October 9, he was finally able to go home.
“Life throws us insane curveballs that sometimes we’re not prepared for,” Alderson added, “but it’s how you respond that shows what kind of person you are. No matter what the hell you’re going through, nothing is unbeatable. Attack every single day like it’s your last and tell those around you that you love them and appreciate them. Because you never know what could happen. Thank you to all of you out there as well who continue to send me encouraging messages. I promise it doesn’t go unnoticed.”
Alderson signed off with his hashtag “#NoSurrender,” which has been his motto throughout his battle with cancer. He was inspired by the song with that title off of Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A. album and even managed to get the musician to autograph it on his arm so that it could be his very first tattoo!
It’s wonderful to hear that Alderson is doing so well and continuing to share his inspirational message with the world. And we hope everyone will join us in sending best wishes for continued good health in the future.
